Dear Sisulu Family,

Carolyn and I were shocked and saddened to read of the passing of Moyikwa.  Although we did not have the honour of meeting Moyi, I owe an enormous personal debt to his dad, Zwelakhe, who patiently counselled and guided me when I began visiting South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s as a Rockefeller Foundation officer mandated to assist civic organisations, alternative media, trade unions and others courageous enough to pressure for change.  Zwelakhe’s advice was invaluable and owe him a debt I can never repay.

Since moving to Johannesburg in 1998 Carolyn and I have learned more about the family’s enormous contributions to democratic South Africa, and I have had the privilege to have younger members of the family attend and succeed in my International Relations courses at the University of the Witwatersrand.  So reading of Moyi’s untimely and tragic loss to Covid, prompts this note to you.  It also reminds me of the strength, joy and inspiration that your family has given to the nation, and to the world.  Please accept our sincere condolences.

In sympathy,

Carolyn and John Stremlau
